Bangalore (Karnataka) [India], October 24: Aastrika Midwifery Centre (AMC), one of Bengaluru’s most reputed maternity hospitals, founded by Dr Janhavi Nilekani, today expanded its services to a new 8,000 sq. ft. facility in the heart of Bengaluru. Inaugurated by Shri Dinesh Gundu Rao, Hon’ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare Department, the new centre has been launched in collaboration with Trustwell Hospitals, JC Road. This cutting-edge birth centre offers boutique maternity care, comprehensive women’s health services, neonatology, and paediatrics.
In the four years since launch, Aastrika Midwifery Centre has set new benchmarks in safe, ethical, evidence-based clinical practice. The hospital has supported over 700 births, including 100+ water births, with a 73% normal delivery rate. Their c-section rate of just 27% is significantly lower than the 65%-85% prevalent in metro city private hospitals. This is achieved by strictly adhering to clinical protocols and supporting women through one-to-one midwifery care and an array of pain relief methods.
Aastrika’s pioneering services address the growing demand for high-quality, mother-centric birthing experiences in the city. The interdisciplinary team, composed of obstetricians, professional midwives, paediatricians, and nurses, provides personalised care to each mother, with a strong focus on shared decision-making and informed consent. AMC is equipped with state-of-the-art sensory birthing suites, luxury rooms, a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and access to round-the-clock operating theatres and ICUs.
Speaking about AMC’s success, Dr Neena Malhotra, Professor and HoD, OBGYN, AIIMS Delhi, remarked, “Over the last few years, I have watched Aastrika’s growth, visited their centre, and seen Janhavi present their statistics and clinical protocols. Janhavi and the Aastrika team are deeply committed to evidence-based medicine and healthcare quality improvement. This has enabled c-section rates under 30%, which is remarkable for a private hospital. Aastrika has also set up a beautiful space, in which they provide midwifery, extensive labour support, and pain relief, to fulfil their vision of mother-centric care. I am delighted that they are moving to a larger and central facility!”
In Aastrika’s care approach, normal deliveries are prioritised, while ensuring that full emergency support is always available. The hospital specialises in high-risk pregnancies and in Vaginal Births After Caesareans (VBACs).
Dr H V Madhusudan, Chairman, Trustwell Hospitals, said, “We are excited to welcome Aastrika Midwifery Centre to provide women’s health and pediatric services at Trustwell Hospitals. Aastrika’s specialised birthing services, paired with Trustwell’s world-class infrastructure and emergency facilities, provide an ideal model of care for childbirth. With this partnership, we mark a powerful step forward in our commitment to serve the community at large.”
Speaking about AMC opening in Trustwell Hospitals, Dr Janhavi Nilekani, PhD, Founder and Chairperson, emphasised, “At AMC, our vision is to create transformative birth experiences that mothers remember with pride, joy, and fulfilment. Evidence-based protocols, informed consent, and shared decision-making are the backbone of our clinical care. In Trustwell Hospitals, we have found a perfect partner who shares our commitment to clinical excellence.”
During the inauguration, Shri Dinesh Gundu Rao, Hon’ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare Department, emphasised the importance of promoting normal birthing and respectful maternity care for the well-being of mothers and newborns. He noted that nearly 60% of deliveries in urban private hospitals are cesarean sections and stressed the need to reduce this by raising awareness and training healthcare professionals. He commended Aastrika’s efforts in both the public and private sectors to bridge this gap through evidence-based, woman-centric care and expressed hope that the initiative would inspire more hospitals across Karnataka to make safe and normal birth the standard.
With this expansion, Aastrika Midwifery Centre and Trustwell Hospitals bring a proven, evidence-based model of maternity care to the city’s centre. The partnership demonstrates how clinical rigour and patient-centred design can flourish in private healthcare — setting a new benchmark for high-quality obstetric services in India’s growing urban health ecosystem. By combining international best practices with a deep understanding of women’s needs, Aastrika and Trustwell together are redefining excellence in birthing.
